Do We Really Want To Keep the Mom & Pop's in Business?
You know when you see a bakery called Aunt Dot's Baked Goods you are going to love it. Then you walk in the door and the aroma hits you immediately and you know you are about to enjoy one of the best baked goods ever. The melt-in-your mouth kind. The same thing occurs when you find that little street in some small town and you don't see a single chain restaurant or store and you just know this is going to be a FUN shopping day. So since we all love the little Mom & Pop's, why do our habits almost guarantee that they won't be able to stay in business and corporate HUMONGOUS business is just going to keep growing and growing and growing. The little guy has so many strikes against them. And yet we little guys keep trying to make it knowing that the odds are so against us. I will be doing a number of blogs on the why it is almost impossible for the little guy to succeed. It's not that they don't have great ideas. It's not that they don't have super products to sell. It's not that they don't treat their customers right (quite frankly they are the ones who really care about you and believe me, the little guy only cares about how much more he is padding his pockets). We are making billionaire's and trillionaire's out of so many well-known name businesses like Wal[-Mart and Amazon. Heck, even many medium sized business are having problems competing. When was the last time you were able to walk into a Toy's R Us? Where did all of the Sears go? IF you want to be the next Mom & Pop business next door or even on the internet, then you need to shop there and quit RUNNING to the big box stores every time you want something. All of us together can change this trend. Don't you just hate it when you go on a trip and all you see are chain businesses? You know you want to try something new or different from what you have right down the street from you, but it is almost impossible to find that little niche place.
